Cook – 1 Cup Toor Dal -Wash – +/- 6 Cups Water -Bring to the boil – Skim off any scum that rises to the surface.
Add – 2 Slit Green Chilli – 1 Chopped Onion chunks – Cook till just done
Saute – 1 tbsp. Coconut Oil – 1 Chopped Onion pcs. – handful Curry leaves – 1 tsp. Salt – till translucent – 1 tsp. Crushed Chilli Powder. – Stir +/- 1 mnt – low flame
Mix – Saute to Cooked Dal – Add water if needed – Bring to Boil – Turn off Stove – Done
Serve with Rice or Naan.
Note : Add more or less water as required. Adjust Salt and Spice to taste. Soak Dal for couple of hours to reduce cooking time.
This recipe brings back memories of my Dad who loved Dal and cooked various versions of Dal most evenings. Appachan I have decided to make Dal most evening too.

Dhaba Dal – Green Lentil Curry
Soak – Cook – Green gram 1 cup – 5 cups water – soaked over night – cook till soft
Chop – 2 Medium Onions – 5 Garlic cloves – 1 inch pc Ginger – Few Curry leaves – 2 tomatoes
Spices – 1 tsp. chilli Powder 1/4 tsp. Turmeric powder – 1/4 tsp. Cumin Powder 1/2 tsp. Coriander Powder -1/2 tsp. Garam Masala – 1 tsp. – 1 tsp. Salt – – pinch Asafoetida powder
Heat – Pan – 2 tbsp. Ghee – Onion Ginger Garlic – till golden – Add spices – Stir +/- 1 mnt – Tomatoes -2 mnts
Combine – Add cooked lentil to above – More water if required – Bring to BoilGarnish – Coriander leaves – Twist of Lemon
Serve Delicious Dhaba Dal Hot with Rice or Naan.
Note – Use Lentil of Choice – Adjust Salt and spices to Taste

Mattanga Parippu – Pumkin Dal Curry
Chop – Wash – Peel – Cut in Chunks – 3 cups Pumkin – Slice – 3 fresh Red Chilli (mild long)
Spices – 1 tsp. Chilli Powder – 1/2 tsp Turmeric powder – 1 tsp. Salt
Cook– 1 cup Red Lentils – 4 cups water – Boil – Skim off and discard foam – low flame – 12- 15 mnts – Add Spices – Pumpkin – cook 6-8 mnts – till Pumpkin is Soft.
Garnish – Heat Pan – 1tbsp. Coconut Oil – 1/2 tsp Mustard Seeds – 1 tsp.Cumin Seeds -1 tsp. Crushed Garlic – Handful Curry Leaves – 1 mnt – Add to cooked Above. – Done
Enjoy Delicious Mattanga Parippu Curry with Rice or Chapati
Notes : Adjust salt and Spices to taste. Add more water if required for cooking lentils. Add tsp. of white lentil to Garnish for thicker consistance.
