April 2017. The girls were home for Easter Break and we decided to do a go on a long weekend Trip to Colmar.
Fairytale land or a real city??
Driving south west from Strasbourg along the Alsace Vine Trail we reached this ancient gem of a town. Colmar is at the very heart of Alsace is the perfect starting point to explore the picturesque towns and villages along the Alsace wine country. Alsace in the Vosges mountains is an experience not to be missed.
Enchanting Vineyards along the Alsace Wine Route
This region is situated on the eastern edge of the Ballons des Vosges Nature park, a protected region of woodlands and historical sites including the imposing Haut-Koenigsbourg castle perched on top of a mountain.
The little Venice of France Colmar
Colmar enjoys lots of sunshine between March to October and said to be the driest part in France. Beauty of Colmar lies in its exquisitely maintained city center with little canals and very colorful houses.
Highlight of the day being chased by a Swan!!
Taking a canal cruise is a must-do while in Colmar. The nesting Swans are the Real Rulers of canals protecting their territory and their little ones. The swan in this picture was trying to chase our boat in the opposite direction and almost toppled our boat. The boatman is used to this show and able to navigate around her.

The French sculptor who crafted the Statue of Liberty, Frederic Auguste Bartholdi is from Colmar.
Comlar’s Statue of Liberty
Colmar is indeed a pretty little town, and worth a weekend visit. Must see places would be Tanner’s district, little Venice, Dominican church, Maison Pfister, Koifhus and a boat trip on the canal.
Surrounding places of interest would be the Vosges mountains and the Alsace wine trails. The black forest region in Germany is about two hour’s drive from Colmar.
